I often think in series, collections, and multiples. I don't just create a song; I want an album. Or better yet, I want to create a catalog of ten albums. That is also what happened with THE BOLD FONT. It started as a free project for everyone to use, which is why it still has a free version, and I don't want to take that away.
However, once I began to take THE BOLD FONT a bit more seriously, I started thinking in terms of a collection of fonts—a complete type foundry. When I do so, it has to have a creative concept. In the case of my font foundry, the plan has always been to create 26 fonts, one for each letter of the alphabet. We covered the 'B' with THE BOLD FONT, and now we just need to figure out twenty-five more names to make it a fun little series from A to Z.
But my mind doesn't stop there, because what the fonts are called is as important as the concept. THE BOLD FONT got its name literally from making a font bold, as in the weight of a font—the bold version of a font. So, my head decided that all names should be typography or at least design-related. I know I am limiting myself quite a bit, but it was also a fun challenge.
At this point in developing this concept, I had at most three fonts completed and maybe six more sketches lying around. So, the whole concept of the type foundry may mean more than the fonts themselves. But it is how my mind works; it always thinks of ways to make it a little more unique, giving it that extra background element to consider.
I know that not every user of my fonts realizes this and just has fun with a single one. But it's like, if you know, you know. The same goes for my art; if you see it, you see it; if you feel it, you feel it. If not, it's just another nice picture on the wall, which is also totally great.
